The LORD is good,
a refuge in times of trouble.
He cares for those who trust in him
(Nahum 1:7 NIV)
So, what do you do when the pain of the past threatens your present and your future? First, ask yourself if the past is truly in the past, where it belongs. Have you confronted what happened? Are the same people (or situations) still hurting you? Have your examined the experience and made a plan to get past it? Sometimes the past comes back to hurt us because we are stuck right in the middle of it. Have you ignored your pain or put a bandage on the hurt and hoped that that would heal it? Does every attempt to look honestly at the trauma send you scurrying away in fear?
You cannot rid the closet of the monsters of your dreams unless you open the door and shine some light on them. Sounds scary, huh? You bet it is and no one should do that kind of thing alone. You need help, someone to walk along side of you as you journey through the pain of the past. You need someone to offer you a lap to curl up on when you feel like a child with bad dreams. You may even need someone who is willing to step in front of you when the blows of life are too much for you to handle. There is hope to be found here on your journey. If you are willing to take the trip to the future you were created to have, you will never have to take one step alone.
Those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint. (Isaiah 40:31)
