Reflection

Look once again at Beckmann's Painting of Christ and the Woman Taken in Adultery. Notice the opposing forces depicted in the scene: forces of condemnation and forces of restoration. What forces may be at odds with you and your sense of forgiveness? Which of these forces are external, and which are internal?

In what ways may your guilt be the result of not pleasing others? Is there a difference between pleasing others and pleasing God? How might God be calling you to let go of the opinions of others and to base your self-worth more on God?

Are there ways in which you may need to do more than just confess a wrongdoing? Are there amends to be made? Who are some wise persons from whom you may seek counsel regarding these situations?

In what ways might your sin actually be a virtue overextended?

Could you be holding onto your guilt as a way of punishing yourself?
